Publicity is a free form of advertising given by others for your service / product. Predominantly it is given by editors of magazines / periodicals when they include your product / service in their free editorial coverage. This is as good or more than that of a paid ad.  For example when you give a quarter page ad in an industry magazine you will have to shell out a couple of thousands of bucks.  Whereas in editorial coverage  you will get a write up of around  200 words about  your product / service with photograph for free.  Since it's an editorial coverage you will get more authencity than your paid ad because the editor is narrating the features of your product, not you.

So whenever you give paid ads it is essential for you to see tht you get a few write ups also.  Thus you will get more value for your paid ad.

Many directories are giving free listings which you should make use of.  Because normally a person who is looking for a desired product / service he will also look for the suppliers on the listing beside that of the ad.

A new trend in the publicity is 'advetorial'.  Advetorial means for your every paid ad publishers will give a certain space to write about your product / service or company.  This also a good idea to make use of as you will not be able to tell all of the features of your products on a quarter or half page ad.  If your ad is placed beside the write up, it will be more visible.
